Flashback to December 2013, a woman in her late 20’s grows increasingly tired of the constant negativity that seems to be permeating every inch of the internet. She decides enough is enough and sets out to create her own little space online. This space would be encouraging, uplifting, truthful, and loving. She thought there needed to be a breath of fresh air where people could read articles that made them feel better about life. If you haven’t figured it out yet that woman is me! It is crazy to think that I’ve been doing this since January of 2014. I realize I have not been blogging for that long but if I look back at my first blog post and how I have grown, it is astonishing! I have done a lot of things poorly and have done a few things right. Whether you are blogger, Etsy shop owner, Instagram influencer, or online business owner I am going to share with you 3 truths about making money online. These are truths I wish I would have known from the very beginning.
I want to start by saying that this is not a quick guide to starting a business with only minimal effort. If anyone ever tells you that creating a successful online presence, business, or shop is quick and easy they are lying to you. There are no shortcuts in life and you have to put in the work, effort, and talent to make something successful. This post is going to have tough love, truth bombs, and loving encouragement. So, without further ado here are 3 truths about making money online.
When I first started my blog I scoured the internet for free resources that would help make me a better blogger. I would spend hours upon hours on Pinterest looking for articles that would tell me how to create better content. Aside from wanting to be good I wanted these changes to be fast. Immediate success. Let me tell you right now- success does not happen over night! You gotta work it to earn it! Imagine my surprise when none of the articles gave a secret formula to immediate success – because there is none. I have been blogging for over three years and I have consumed just about every free resource possible. The one thing I noticed about these resources was that they all said generally the same thing. When it comes to resources free will only get you so far from there you will have to invest money in a resource to take you to the next level. Whether that is an online course, education (i.e. business school), or hiring a consultant. The worthwhile resources WILL cost you money. That is how other business owners pay their bills.
No one is going to give away the worthwhile goods for free. You wouldn’t walk into a department store expecting the cashier to give you that Ralph Lauren dress. No, you are ready to hand over your credit card to pay for it. That is the way it is. Now, with that said don’t run out and purchase the first resource you find. I highly recommend researching that person/business. You need to know who you are dealing with and their reputation. I recently purchased my very first course this May. I spent many months following this blogger and getting to know her as a business presence. Learn the person/company’s reputation first.
Research, Research, Research
Researching will become your new best friend. The amount of free resources available on Pinterest alone is astonishing. You can really learn a lot from other people’s mistakes. You can also learn a great deal from the websites/shops/blogs you frequent. I have done more research for my blog in the past 3.5 years than I have in my entire educational career. While I have done an insane amount of research when it comes to blogging I have enjoyed every moment of it. It is a thirst that cannot be quenched. I just have to keep exploring.
My recommendation when it comes to research is get on Pinterest. I created a Small Business board where I store all my business related articles. I have linked it HERE so you can check it out for yourself. It is important to learn as much as you can when it comes to the avenue you are pursuing. Save the resources and go back to the from time to time when you need inspiration.
Time Is Everything
Time is everything. You have to be willing to put in the time. The expectations have to align with reality. If you are anticipating putting in an hour or two a day into your business/shop/blog and expect to have thousands of sales/subscribers/dollars your expectation is way off the mark. The amount of time you put into your venture is directly related to the outcome. Little time = little outcome. Be honest with yourself and write down what you want. What are you hoping to achieve with this new path. To get a full rundown of How To Set Goals To Achieve Your Dreams CLICK HERE. I give a detailed process on how to achieve the dreams you’ve had your eye on!
I will say that once I started to truly invest my time into my blog I have seen drastic results. My very first post seems so ridiculous compared to what I now post. However, I leave it up to remind myself how much I have grown as a blogger. If you want a good laugh, you can CLICK HERE to check out my very first post.
So far this post has been mostly tough love and truth bombs. Here is the loving encouragement – YOU CAN DO IT! The saying “Nothing worthwhile comes easy” is very fitting here. I have a long way to go with this venture and I am learning something new everyday. However, the growth and honing of my skills is something that does not come quickly. The investment is worth it! If you are willing to put in the blood, sweat, and tears great things can happen!
